Important Notice About 'Free to Good Home' Ads
When a person finds themself with a cat for which they cannot find a home for; they often place a 'free to a good home' ad or listing in the local newspaper, on a supermarket bulletin board, or a free classified ads website like craigslist, oodle, olx or kijiji. Sadly, this can result in a kitty meeting a horrible fate.
Non-petloving people called bunchers often inquire about animals given away for free, posing as a prospective pet owner to obtain a cat or dog
you have offered for free. Once the animal is in their posession, the person sells the animal for monetary profit to a research laboratory that will use the animal in painful and inhumane scientific tests and experimentation. Essentially, the cat may become a lab rat. Other bunchers may use the cat as a free meal for an exotic pet such as a large snake, or use it as enticement in illegal dogfighting.
While some animals given away for free may truly receive a good home, others still will end up
in the hands of animal abusers like Barry Herbeck, who admitted torturing animals he received from such ads.
For more info. about the dangers of free to good home ads, please read PETA's warning that appears on all Craigslist site localities by clicking here.
To reduces the chances of these scenarios, always charge a suitable adoption fee. If you MUST give any animal away for free, ALWAYS insist on a reference or recommendation from the inquiring party's veterinarian. If one is not available, disregard the party as a potential owner of your animal, for kitty's sake!
